The English were smart!. The Spanish ships could not sail into the wind very well (nor could the English, but they were better at it)!. The English maintained the weather gauge, always staying upwind of the Spanish and harassing them past the possible ports in which they could land!. They were also in their home waters, and understood the tides, currents and winds in the Channel which they used to great advantage!. Once the Spanish had been harried downwind down the Channel they could not get back, and nature did the rest with a couple of convenient storms!. The battle(s) make a lot of sense when you understand the nature of wind and tides, and the limitations of sailing ships!.

The English ships were more modern, smaller and more manouvrable!. Henry VIII and Elizabeth set out to develop a navy, which makes sense to defend an island nation!. Some of the ships were owned by the nation, others, like Sir Walter Raleigh's "Ark Raleigh" (later grabbed by the Queen and called the "Ark Royal") were provided privately!. The ships were better and the seamen were better It was that navy which defeated the Armada!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It isn't called the English Armada, it's the English fleet that sailed against the Spanish Armada!.

The Spanish Armada took a VERY hazardous route to avoid the British Fleet because they knew they would be decimated!. In the long run - it happened anyway - Mother Nature took care of them (it)!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
