In the early 1700s, farming families would still be largely self-sufficient!. This would mean that the farmer's wife would be responsible for producing most of the foodstuffs, clothing and household items that would be used by the family!. She would spin wool and flax into thread to make clothing, she would cook and preserve food (preserving food to last through the winter was a particularly importnat job)!. She would be responsible for the dairy and would produce her own butter and cheese!. She would also be responsible for the poultry!. Candles and soap would very likely be made at home as well!. She would grow vegetables in the kitchen garden, and she would brew the ale that the family would drink!. She would also be expected to have a good knowledge of medicine and first aid and would be expected to doctor any member of the family who got sick, since there was seldom a doctor within easy reach!. A farmer's wife would very likely sell her surplus products, butter, cheese, eggs etc, and by custom the money was hers to keep!.

The children would be expected to help their parents as soon as they were old enough, boys helping their fathers working in the fields, girls learning the multitude of domestic skills they would need to survive!.

By the late 1700s, there would be less emphasis on self-sufficiency!. Cloth for instance might be bought rather than made at home, though the women would still most likely make the cloth into clothes!.
