Question: Why did the U!.S!. fight a war of independance from Britian!?
I don't live in the U!.S!., but I do have some knowledge of history!. I hope I am not sounding ignorant; but I thought the U!.S!. wanted independance from Britian because the Brits raised tea taxes; and the U!.S!. was unhappy with "taxation without representation"!. Hence the Boston Tea Party!.

But I came upon this book that says the Brits actually lowered tea taxes before the Boston Tea Party!.!.!.so what were the Americans fighting for!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Taxation without Representation was just one of the reasons!.

Over the years, the British government had taken more control over the colonies, with the view that the colonies existed for the benefit of the mother country!. Each of the colonies had been created with a charter that set up the local government!. Some colonies had a elected governor & legislature, others a proprietary governor (appointed by the colony's founders) and a few had governors appointed by the king!. By the time of the Revolution, all the colonies had appointed governors and this wasn't setting well with the colonist!.

The people who settled the colonies had left Britian to get out of the political situations over there!. So they already had a long list of grievances prior to the Revolution!. After the Seven Years War (called the French & Indian War in the Colonies) the British government stepped up its intrustions upon the colonies which over 13 years got to the point that hostilities broke out!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The Americans fought for independence because Britain always taxed them, they had no representation in government, they were always stuck in the 13 colonies, could not move around, because of the proclamation line of 1763, the British always passed acts that limited their freedom, it barely gave them freedom and when they rebelled with the Boston tea party they were put under British army rule and they were under some sort of state arrest, it was time for them to gain there freedom, pick up a book and read about it if you are interested in it!.

It wasn't just tea taxes, there were many other things that americans were unhappy about!. The one thing that sticks out to me is the stamp act, which caused people to pay for any kind of document (even newspaper)!. also it was the taxes that put them on edge, things like the Boston Massacre where used as real firestarters!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The Colonists were interested in moving into the territories to the west of the Colonies, territories that would later become, in part, the states of Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana!. The British government wanted to keep these lands for the Native Americans, and this led to more conflicts between the British and the Colonists!. This is just one more reason among many which would lead to the Revolution!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
