It was created to build protections from the West!. They wanted to make sure that their citizens did not cross over into West Berlin!. It created a climate that spies could not just cross over into east Berlin!. It allowed for control!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Okay well the East Germans weren't all necessarily Communist, so they weren't so happy when their country was divided!. The USSR built the Berlin Wall partly out of ego - they wanted Western troops (from US/Britain/etc) out of Western Germany!. The USSR basically stated to the US "get your troops out, or we will go to war with you!." The US did not want war, but they certainly did not want to show weakness either!. So the Berlin Wall was built out of the USSR's ego/ultimatum and divided a nation for almost half a century!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
