I have to congratulate on trying a question of this depth!. Wikipedia lists 417 "revolutions or rebellions" in human history!.
I think that one of the biggest unifying features has to be a person who provides the political will to the people to launch the revolution!.
It's a good question because people will tolerate a terrible situation for a long time without starting a revolution!. also the consequences of revolution are often horrible, in many cases worse than the problems that started the revolution in the first place!.
The American Revolution is an one exception!. The death toll was not that severe in this case!. However, many people feel that the word "revolution" is not very accurate in describing the American war of Independence!. In contrast, the Mexican war of Independence was a true revolution, and the death toll was extremely high!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

1!. a) The totalitarian government loosens its grip on the people (granting freedoms, rights, improves poverty, etc)!. b) Or alternatively, the people are already used to having certain rights or are used to having a good quality of life because they have lived that way for a long time!.

2!. a) The people's expectations increase!. b) Something like a famine or a disease outbreak ruins the quality of life of the people who were used to living well!.

3!. a) The government cannot meet the people's expectations for long, and soon drop off and let things return to as they were before!. b) The people became outraged that the quality life they expect is no longer being met and the government is doing nothing to remedy it!.

Great question!. I believe it has to be the lost of hope or success by the middle class!. All revolutions started with the middle class overthrowing the top level!. If the middle class loses hope or they cannot support their families then that leads to revolution!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
