I hadn't heard of the Cabot connection!. It always seemed strange to me that people thought America was named after Americo Vespucci (or Bespucio) as in those days noone would name something except after a surname!. I had heard that the Manichean Christians called a paradise land in the west La Merica, meaning star of the west!. Some people also think the Knights Templars got there before Columbus - there is a strange tower on Rhode Island and a rock drawing of a knight!. also in the book Maps of the Ancient Sea Kings, the author argues that Columbus definitely had a map - there definitely were maps showing the west coast of America noone had apparently visited!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Christopher Columbus didn't discover the new world!. There is plenty of evidence that it had been "discovered" by many groups - and that's if you don't count the fact that it was heavily population at that time Columbus landed!.

Medieval English, Irish and Basque fisherman had discovered the "Grand Banks" fishing area off Newfoundland!. The early Vikings actually built dwellings, but didn't remain for long!. Very early roman period boat remains were found near the mouth of the Amazon!. Cocaine showing up in an ancient Egyptian mummy analysis!.

What Columbus DID do was publicized his discovery!. Most of the other groups were trying hard to keep it a secret!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It was really the vikings from Greenland who discovered it before him and even more before that were the Native Americans, of course, but Columbus was the first European to discover the new world, there was somebody sent before him to discover any land but the ship never came back!. Although Columbas discovered the new world completely by accident!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I use to think he was the one who discovered America, but after doing some reasearch into this topic, I found out that the vikings had been here before him and upon further research I learned that there was a Chinese explorer that had discovered America long before the vikings had, but if I try to debate this with a history teacher, it doesn't work, since the only history they know of is what they themselves have been taught in school and college!. So, to keep things peaceful in the world, I just keep this inside information to myself and allow others to believe whatever they want!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Indian americans are supposedly descendants from migants who crossed the Bering detroit a long time ago!.
Then the vikkings reached North America!.
There is a theory about a Chineese admiral who would have reached the Western shores of America, before C!.Columbus!.
What is for sure, after 1492, America would not be forgotten by the rest of the then known world!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

You got a lot of accurate answers!. But I think you are after historic event not theories about who was first!.

There was a man named AMERICO BESPUSIO!. The American Continent was named after him!. However history claims that Christopher Columbus had come before him and Bespusio just beat him to the news!. So they fixed the media by bringing Colon to the picture as a previous sailor who discovered the new world!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

There is evidence that many people found North America before Columbus: the Norse, of course (pardon the rhyme), the Polynesians, the Phonecians, and possibly the Chinese, to name just a few!.
Columbus never set foot on mainland North America, and to the day he died, he believed he had found another way to "the Indies," i!.e!. Japan and China!.
Check out a book called "Lies My Teacher Told Me" by James Loewen!. One of the first chapters in there deals with this, and the whole book deals with the reasons why the history that is taught is necessarily historically accurate!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

well Columbus never sat foot in north America, viking Leif Erikson was the first European in this land in the year 1000m he named the area new Holland, many years later the British moved in and renamed the area after the duke of york and called it new york!. Columbus did discover many areas in south America however including Columbia, Cuba, the Bahamas to name a few!. the true discoverers of America are the native American Indians who arrived here from south east Asia about 30,000 years ago!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

No!. that's what he taught but native americans came to America thousands of years before any European ever laid eyes on it!. Over time they developed a new society and unique way of life!. Native Americans, who have lived in this country thousands of years longer than the Europeans, had a distinct way of life, a unique culture, an interesting religion, and have affected the course of history for all of the people of the United States!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

There is also John Cabot, who sailed to America (1497) in the Matthew (a copy of which is in Bristol Docks) and his trip was partly financed by Amorique!. Coincidentally (!?), Amorique's Coat of Arms, which can still be seen, has stars and stripes on it!.
Google for full info on John Cabot!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

no one discovered the new world!.

there were inhabitants way before, he landed there!. its just that italy was so backwards at the time, they thought the earth was flat and made a big deal when it wasn't, so now their stupidness is celebrated by C!.C!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Over 500 yrs and Natives still get bad answers

Old Chris the lost slave trader was about the 3rd in line behind the Vikings & ChinaWww@QuestionHome@Com

Technically no!. Christopher Columbus never actually discovered America!. Considering that there were already people there that would have to be impossible!. He only discovered the new world from the european view point!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It's pretty much an accepted fact now that the Vikings visited North America almost 500 years before Columbus!.

EDIT: I apologize to all Native Americans because I neglected to mention the fact that they were here thousands of years earlier!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It is likely that Eric the Red's son discovered the new world first!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I would ask the Native AmericansWww@QuestionHome@Com

No - it was never lost!. There were plenty of people living there before him!. In fact whole civilisations!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Nope
The native Americans were here long before any European stepped foot on any American soilWww@QuestionHome@Com
