I assume you mean Europe:
depends on where you lived, who was in charge, and who you were (noble or commoner) and who you commited the crime against!. There was not just one law for the entire continent
adultery--divorce and exiled to a convent (women only--if you were lucky), death, fines, public humiliation

murder--death by hanging, death by beheading, death by drawn and quartered, death by !.!.!.well you get the idea!.

trespassing--fines, imprisionment

heresy--excommunication, imprisionment if you confessed, torture to get a confession and name names if asked, death if you didn't confess, fines

stealing--fines, imprisionment, loss of a hand, death if you stole something of value it became a capital crime!.

your best bet would be to get more specific in what you want!. Rather than ask what was the punishment in medieval times!.!.!.ask for specific dates and locations!. The punishment in France may be different than the punishment for the same crime in England, Spain, Italy or Germany!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

In Medieval times, the punishment's were not equal for all people!. The type of punishment given depended strongly on the perpetrator's social status and standing!.

So if a Serf or Peasant was found guilty of adultery he may have gotten away with it if there was no proof!. If there was proof and family or public outcry, an adulterer could be killed by a jealous husband, tried and found guilty by death by hanging at court- often stoned by community on the way from the jail on a cart to the gallows!. But often knights or lords were given a free pass for raping townspeople or people who are below them in general!. A knight, lord, or even a monk would have more difficulty if they committed adultery with someones wife in the same or similar class!. While they may be killed for it by a jealous husband, or sentenced to death by a court, chances are they would just get away with it!. A woman caught for adultery may be killed by her husband and he would more or less be considered in his rights!.

Murder is more equally (across social lines) punishable by death!. However a serf, peasant or merchant is much more liable to be put to death than a knight, lord or clergy who had more options, power and ways out of trouble!.

While tress passing is a lesser crime, I do imagine it could be punishable by death if a low person were found on a higher person's land, but in general tress passing would probably be punishable by jail time!. I doubt a knight, lord or clergy would be accused of trespassing as they owned much of the land cultivated and were in general masters of the town and the people who lived in them!.

Heresy was a very serious offense and also punishable by death!. You did not commit Heresy lightly around a monk, priest or nun, nor around any who were strongly religious- and many people were- or you may be accused of heresy and put to a trial by a religious court to be ruled on punishment if needed- and that punishment could be the stocks and stoning to death!.

Stealing was commonly punished by cutting off the accused's hand or arm!. If caught a second time you'd lose your other hand!. also poorer people who stole for a living were often branded as Outlaws and had to live outside the normal confines of civilization!. Instead of in towns or farming communities, they would be loosely bonded in lawless communities living in the forest, taking advantage of any helpless people who happened along on their paths!. Sometimes they would loosely organize raids on a farm, a family, a town or whatnot!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

During the Medieval time, one single type of politics had been emploied and that was Absolutist Monarchy!. By that, the King/Queen could decide the fate of every single one of the human-beings from that nation!. Generaly speaking, the punishments consisted of executions in different ways : hanging, torture, throwing to the lion pot-hole, drowning etc!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Broomstick over the head, Crack of a whip to the back!

whopsh!

depends on where also!. you notice the parallel structure of how punishment is related to hate!?

like if a woman commits adultery and the nation doesn't care than nobody hates anybody right!? Its funny how just one person being jealous of his wife going to another man causes us to have laws 500 years later!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Sometimes, stealing would result in a hand being cut off, adultery would sometimes lead to beheading, and if you did something really bad, in england they would draw and quarter you by the end of a horse!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
