Well, when Hughes and Getty died --both in 1976 -- their estimated worth was

J!. Paul Getty - betw $2 and 4 billion (est 1974)
Howard Hughes - about $2 billion

So it's possible they were about tied at that time (though Getty apparently had more)

But your question was about the 1950s!. At that time Getty was certainly further along the Hughes in augmenting his considerable fortune!. In 1957 Getty was considered the wealthiest person in the world (sorry, I don't have his estimated worth at that time yet)Www@QuestionHome@Com
