The Illuminati refers specifically to the Bavarian Illuminati, an Enlightenment secret society!. Adam Weishaupt founded the Illuminati of Bavaria on May 1, 1776 on the principles of his early training as a Jesuit!. Originally called the Order of the Perfectibilists, "its professed object was, by the mutual assistance of its members, to attain the highest possible degree of morality and virtue, and to lay the foundation for the reformation of the world by the association of good men to oppose the progress of moral evil!."
There have been many groups who have used the name, modern and historical, some real some fiction, and there is even a "conspiracy" of so-called Illuminati who want to run the world!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The Illuminati is the name of many groups, modern and historical, real and fictitious, verified and alleged!. Most commonly The Illuminati refers specifically to the Bavarian Illuminati, an Enlightenment secret society, described below!. However, it often refers to an alleged shadowy conspiratorial organization that controls world affairs behind the scenes, usually a modern incarnation or continuation of the Bavarian Illuminati!. Illuminati is sometimes used synonymously with New World Order!."

It can also refer to those who claim to be very enlightened or knowledgeable about a particular subject!.
For example, some of the top FAQFarmers who know a great bit about a certain subject and whose answers are trustworthy could be kind of considered as a member of the Illuminati(Streching it a bit there)!. Some Freemasons may have been Illuminati but there is not a formal Tie between the two!.The Illuminati movement was founded on May 1, 1776, in Ingolstadt (Upper Bavaria), by Adam Weishaupt (died!. 1830)!.
The Catholic Encyclopedia states that in fact he did return to Catholicism and repent the err of his ways!. As to his ancestry no note is given!. I would like to remind the inquisitor of a couple phrases from the book of revelation:

"those who call themselves Jews and are not" and "the synagoge of satan"

while many have used these passages as legitmate reasons for anti-semitism, i think that would be folly!. I do not however, given the nature of what it teaches/practices, think that it would a grave err in judgement to assume that perhaps this synagoge of satan and the false jews are the advocates, founders, and keepers of the 'occult knowledge of Solomon' is Freemasonry!. (and no, not 'blue' i!.e most masons) But those who have the common goal of destroying any Church or Religious authority!.

Some tidbits from the New Advent article on the Illuminati:

"The spread of the spirit of the Illuminati, which coincided substantially with the general teachings of the "enlightenment", especially that of France, was rather accelerated than retarded by the persecution in Bavaria!. "

"Freiherr von Knigge
Duke Ferdinand of Brunswick, the foremost leader of European Freemasonry
Other famous members were Goethe, Herder, and Nicolai!."

"The object of pure (i!.e!. illuminated) Freemasonry is none other than the propagation of the "enlightenment" whereby the seed of a new world will be so widely scattered that no efforts at extirpation, however violent, will avail to prevent the harvest ("Nachtr!.", pp!. 44, 118; "Die neuesten Arb!.", pp!. 11, 70)!. Weishaupt later declared (Nachtrag zu meiner Rechtfertigung, 77 sqq!., 112 sqq!.) that Masonry was the school from which "these ideas" emanated!."

It would appear a classic struggle between the forces of Good (The Church and specifically the Jesuits) and Evil (the relativistic 'enlightened' masters of Freemasonry) (not that im advocating any false dualism, all are sinners)Www@QuestionHome@Com

In Spanish it means literally "Enlightenment"!. Read on!. !. !.

"Italian Illuminato, plural Illuminati, a follower of a mystical movement in Spain during the 16th and 17th centuries!. Its adherents claimed that the human soul, having attained a certain degree of perfection, was permitted a vision of the divine and entered into direct communication with the Holy Spirit!. From this state the soul could neither advance nor retrogress!. Consequently, participation in the liturgy, good works, and observance of the exterior forms of religious life were unnecessary for those who had received the “light!.” The Alumbrados came primarily from among the reformed Franciscans and the Jesuits, but their doctrines seem to have influenced all classes of people!. The extravagant claims made for their visions and revelations caused them to be relentlessly persecuted!. The Inquisition issued edicts against them on three occasions (1568, 1574, and 1623)!."Www@QuestionHome@Com
