Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: The Puritans were not interested in liberty as we know it, only the right to worship God their own way without persecution from the government or leading denomination of the country they came from!. Rights were given only to those who owned land and were male, but the leaders in a Puritan community were fairly disinclined to share what little power they had with other qualifying citizens!. They bordered on communism in their laws, and had very little regard for the things that we, today, would constitute as "liberty"!.Www@QuestionHome@Com Liberty to the Puritans was that they be allowed to practice their religion!. Note that they did not believe in freedom of religion, simply in their religion, and they were just as oppressive and cruel to other religions as england had been to them!.Www@QuestionHome@Com They certainly didn't allow it to Catholics, Anglicans or anyone else who disagreed with their particular interpretation of Christianity!. If you were one of the above, or a Native American, the right to practice you religion was denied!.Www@QuestionHome@Com |
