Impossibly difficult tests were introduced which African Americans had to pass in order to qualify to vote, they were hopelessly difficult!. They would have to do something like reading a complex legal document and then interpreting it, something you'd only really expect a trained lawyer to be able to do rather than an ordinary person!.

And even if someone managed to pass the hurdle and qualify to vote, they would be discouraged from doing so by threats, intimidation and outright violence!.

The infamous and horrible custom of lynching of course was another way in which the African American community was systematically terrorised!.

This is the list of the restrictions that were enforced against blacks during this time period!. Essentially, they are the complete opposite of what you are looking for!.

From the 1880s into the 1960s, a majority of American states enforced segregation through "Jim Crow" laws (so called after a black character in minstrel shows)!.
