Long-term means causes that had been building up over a period of time!. These were:
Militarization and economic expansion of Germany, Japan, USA, and USSR!.
Rise of fascist governments in Europe!.
Treaty of Versailles, which was seen as unfair by Germany!.
The need for lebensraum; an area for economic expansion, by Germany in Europe; and the same for Japan in Asia!. The other countries either had enough land area of their own (USA, USSR) or colonial empires (Britain, France)!.

If you mean, why the U!.S!. got into it then the short term cause was the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the long term cause was our need to protect Europe from the Nazis!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
