Hitler's aggression!. While he was allowed to take areas of Czechoslovakia under the appeasement that was offered by Britain's "Peace in our Time," he took more and more land!. Eventually Hitler invaded Poland - the last straw - and Great Britain and France got involved!.

In a matter of weeks Germany had steamrolled through France; this has nothing to do with French military power!. Nobody would have lasted much more than a month if they were right next to Germany (at least not in 1939) - the military technique of Blitzkreig was just too powerful!.

Put simply, Hitler kept pushing for more land for Germany - and people did agree with him because Germany arguably had been unfairly treated after WW1!. But it quickly became apparent that he was not just taking land that had german people in it, and once he made the move for blatant conquest (Poland) the UK and France (among others) got involved!.

Interestingly enough, the Soviet Union also took a part of Poland (attacking in conjunction with Germany) even though Hitler would inevitably attack the Soviet Union later!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

For a war as large as this, there is no one simple answer to explain why it started!. Many people consider it an extension of WWI and the discontent that arose from the Treaty of Versailles, which accounted for the shifting of alliances of Japan and Italy!. Hitler and the Nazi Party started out of the post-WWI chaos in Germany and really gained power after the worldwide economic crash of the 1930s!.

So the immediate cause, the obvious cause, was Hitler's desire for lebenstraum, or living space, for Germany at the expense of Eastern Europe!. The underlying causes are economic crisis and the unfinished business of WWI!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
