True!. It's even more true that the person who writes the history often spins it to reflect their own views!. Which only means that we need to rely on more than just the written record, which is why modern archeology is so important to the study of history!. Archeology, done correctly, tells us precisely what was there!. Facts, not speculation, not opinion!.

What was the typical slave diet in the south before the Civil war!? Dig up the middens, dig up the foundations of the places where the slaves lived, dig up the old latrines - analyze what you find and figure it out!. Modern history is fuller and more accurate because of archaeological evidence!.

History is also now the study of historical records using statistical analysis!. Evidence of the use of Birth control during the 1890s can be inferred by the decease in the number of live births per woman!. Do you want proof; check the census records!.

An historian worth his weight in paper is aware of these problems, all one can hope to do is understand the prejudices and tendencies of earlier times, and try to mitigate the effects!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It's Not!
Human memory is the least reliable source of information!. And of course there is also the statement that history is only written by the victors!.
History should be based on facts, statements that have solid evidence to back them up!. Unfortunately this evidence can take years to emerge giving historians plenty to debate about, and write about!.

We are still today uncovering new evidence about how the dinosaurs died, how our planet evolved, the Ancient Egyptians, World Wars and who shot J!.F!.K!? etc!. Until all the facts are accounted for then history will never be "authentic!." That's why history is such a fascinating subject as we all get a chance to piece together the available "facts" and make conclusions based on what we have at that time!
