Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
It was James Stuart, son of Mary Stuart, who was the daughter of Marie d'Guise and James V of Scotland, making her the grandniece of Henry VIII, whose sister was married off to the King of Scotland!. This made Elizabeth a second or third cousin to James I of England, who was also James VI of Scotland!.

James V was killed on the field of Flodden, in a battle organized by Katherine of Aragon, while Henry was off playing dress up with the King of France!.

James I of England and Scotland, was succeeded by his son Charles I, who evidently waited several years before bothering to go to Edinburgh for his coronation to the Scottish throne!.

Charles was succeeded by chaos, then Cromwell, then chaos again, and then his eldest son Charles II, who had been under the protection of Louis XIV for the last few years!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Elizabeth I's heir was James I (in England)/James VI (in Scotland)!. He was the Scottish king before he was the English king, and it was his rule that united England and Scotland under the same ruler!. He was from the house of Stuart, the son of Mary Stuart and Henry Darnley!. He was related to Elizabeth through her father, Henry VIII!. Henry VIII's sister, Margaret, married into the house of Stuart, giving birth to Mary de Guise, who was the mother of Mary Stuart (Queen of Scots)!. Mary Stuart's parentage also lead to her claim to the throne of England!.

James' mother, Mary Stuart, was executed during Elizabeth's reign, after she was connected to many treasonous plots!. Mary was viewed as the Catholic heir to the English throne, while Elizabeth was known as Henry VIII's Protestant bastard daughter, as her mother was his 2nd wife, Anne Boleyn, who he married after "illegally" (in the eyes of the Catholic church and Catholics) divorcing Katharine of Aragon, mother of Mary Tudor, the bloody queen!. Henry VIII created the Anglican religion so that he could marry Anne Boleyn, who he later executed under (probably) false charges of treason, adultery and incest!.

As Elizabeth was (debatedly) the Virgin Queen, she had no children, and had to name an heir!. She did not do so until she was on her deathbed, but she eventually named James I, the Protestant son of her treasonous Catholic cousin, as her heir!.
James' heir was Charles I!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
