The serfs or villeins worked the land that produced the food, so their role in society was very important!. But a merchant would have a higher social standing, would be richer than a serf etc!. A lord would not normally be a merchant, he would be a landowner who would get income from farming his lands and from rent from his tenants!.

The villeings were vital to the economy, but merchants had their place too in trading and importing and exporting goods!. They had a useful role as well, but in those days, especially when most people were still largely self-sufficient, the villeins were probably more vital!.

The lifestyles of lords and merchants would be somewhat different!. a lord would mostly divide his time between his country estate and being in town, at court, or very often away fighting!. A merchant would most likely live in town, but wealthier merchants might have country houses too!. And he would be likely to travel abroad on business rather than to fight!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Medieval Europe

For several hundred years, from about the first to around the fifth century AD, Rome was the greatest power on Earth, ruling Britain and the countries around the Mediterranean Sea!. However, in northern Europe, there were fierce tribes that were only held at bay by the Romans!. Around 400 AD, the Roman Empire began to weaken and the northern tribes swept across the continent of Europe and plundered the city of Rome!. The Roman Empire collapsed and was gradually replaced by many small kingdoms ruled by a strong warrior!.

For many years, Europe was without the luxuries and riches that had marked the height of Rome!. Many centuries later, a new interest in learning would mark the beginning of the Renaissance!. The thousand years between is called the Middle Ages or the Medieval period!. This period began and ended for different countries at different times across Europe!. It also affected different areas of the continent in different ways!.

The northern tribes did not stamp out learning completely, only momentarily set it back!. The Catholic Church was already a powerful institution at the end of the Roman Empire and it continued to be the unifying force between the many small kingdoms that would become Europe!. The Church salvaged much from the ruins of the ancient world and became one of the centers of learning during the Middle Ages!. The people of the Middle Ages had a rich culture and produced many advances in art, literature, science, and medicine and paved the way for the ideas that would become the beginning of the Renaissance!.

To begin your journey into the Middle Ages, try to picture a world with far fewer people, where no one moved away from their hometown, and life moved at a slower pace!. There was no electricity, no water from faucets, no television, and no cars!. you cant really say cause the lives of these people were VERY interdependent!. without them, there would be no production and security!.

but!.!.!. during the middle ages, there werent many merchants so i dont think they were important because the manors were very self sefficient!. food was cultivated by the serfs, labor by the women!.

the serfs are the financial foundation of a manor whereas a lord is like the government!. the serfs provided food and other necessities and the lords gave security and land!.

i know htis isnt one of your choices, i would choose the church!. throughout the middle ages, the church united all of europe and was the ruler of england!. if the church did not bless your manor, you would not be able to survive!.
