Scotland was a independant country from 843 until 1707,when the treaty of union was ratified, tho some might agrue that Scotland was part of england when James sat on the throne of both nations ,scotland was a seperate and independent nation with its own goverment and parliment, tho James wanted to form a "united kingdom" it didnt actually happen till 1707 with the treaty of union!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Scotland was an independent country with its own parliament and ruler ("King" by the late 11th C), up to the time of James VI (son of Mary, Queen of Scots 1542-67), who also became King James I of England in 1603 following the death of Elizabeth I!. From then on, mainly, the two countries had the same ruler although the actual union of the parliaments didn't take place until much later!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Isn't it interesting that Scotland wasn't conquered by England - A sitting King of Scotland inherited the throne of England (James VI of Scotland became James I of England when Queen Elizabeth I of England died without issue (children) in 1603!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
