Caledars, and there are more than two (but I presume that you are referencing the Gregorian and the Julian calendars that have been utilized in the Western world), are normally referenced to some particularly "significant" event!. The Gregorian and Julian calendars are linked to the presumed date of the birth of Jesus, with one calendar including leap years and other not including the extra day in February for leap year!.

As to what year it is, that would depend on The French, following their revolution, implemented a calendar which was linked to the beginning of the French Republic, so the year is less than 250!. Obviously, cultures not linked to a "Christian" determinate, such as Japan, have a traditional calendar that has the year as being more than 3000!. Your year depends on your starting point for the calendar!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

well we can know by looking at old bibles, paintings things like that from Jesus's time since that's when the years started and with today's new technology get a benchmark age on it/them!. that's what tell us!. but even if we were in the 1700's that would disrupt everything, data in computers, dates times so if it is we wouldn't change it and leave it as it is!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
