he's sometime seen as good cause as the man who "saved" the french revolution!.
after 1792 and fall of the monarchy, france became a republic!. but cause of the war against europe, there were great economic and politic problems!. so the republic, unsettled, changed the constitution in 1792, 1793,1795 and 1799!.
then came napoleon :
- he won and beat the strongest ennemies (E!.G!. italy wars, 1797), so france was in 1802 in peace for the 1st time for 10 yrs (peace of Amiens, but UK broke it, not napoleon)!. then he was a leader in europe!.
- settled the political problems of the republic : his power was strong enough to stabilize the republic (Consulate period)!.
- stabilized the money, with the "franc germinal"!.
- saved the heritage of the revolution : creating himself the Civil Code (= laws inspired by the revolution ideas like liberty or equality)!. as the leader in europe in the 1800-1810 period, he enabled the revolution ideas to go anywhere in europe!.
- strengthened the french State, creating the "préfets" to administrate France, and "lycées" to educate ppl!.
- let the french revolution ideas (liberty etc) to go out france and develop some of the most important themes in the european history in the 19th and even 20th century : liberty and (political and economic) liberalism, nationalism!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

He was a ruthless dictator!. Although he stabilised French society after the turmoil of the Revolution, he imposed severe restrictions on liberty!. Strict censorship was reintroduced, as was imprisonment without trial!. The male head of the family was given absolute power over his wife and children, women, who had gained some significant legal rights during the Revolutionary period, were reduced to the status of minors!. Although there were elective bodies, they had no real power, and Napoleon basically ruled by Imperial decree!. And his territorial ambitions led ultimately to disaster for France, with many lives being lost in his wars of conquest!. He tried to reinstate slavery in the French colonies, which led to the loss of those colonies!. He overreached himself in many directions!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Napoleon was great for France!. He established a national bank, built better roads, created public schools, pulled France out of bankruptcy and won many great battles!. Shortly after he became first consul he made peace with all of Europe including Great Britain!.

Most of the bad things that people hear about Napoleon are lies spread by the British!. The British were responsible for the continuation of the war against France and all of the hardships that came with it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
