The allies had tried first a naval assault through the dardanelles but took heavy causualties from mines and artillery!. It was believed that a land assault was unavoidable so plans were drawn up to land troops at Gallipoli!.

The troops never managed to gain the high ground and the battle turned into a miniature western front with a series of trenches on the narrow stretch of land!. The Ottomans lacked heavy artillery so despite their numerical superiority the battle dragged on for months!.

The reason why more troops kept getting sent was the same as everywhere else, the allies used exceedingly reckless tactics that caused severe losses that needed to be constantly replaced!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I'm American, but my question would have to be: which war or which period of time are you speaking of!. My guess is that you are speaking of World War I, since Australian troops were key to the British offensive in the Dardanelles, which the Battle of Gallipoli was a part!. If so, I would direct you to the Wikipedia site: http://en!.wikipedia!.org/wiki/Dardanelles!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The Turks, under Kemal Ataturk, were providing much more effective resistance than any lesser breed without the law had any right to do under the Blimpish, jingoist attitudes of the Pom commanders' worldview!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
