Christopher Columbus (bt!. August and October 1451 – May 20, 1506) was an Italian navigator, colonizer, and explorer whose voyages across the Atlantic Ocean led to general European awareness of the Western Hemisphere and of the American continents within!. Born in Genoa, (Now part of Italy) in 1451, Cristobal Colon attempted to reach India by sailing around the world!. There was a lot of trade between Europe and India at the time, but the overland routes were slow and often plagued by wars and banditry!. It is sometimes said that before Columbus, people thought the world was flat!. This is not true!. All geographers from Ancient Greek times onwards knew that the Earth was a sphere, and there were some fairly good estimates of its size!. Colon probably chose the smallest estimate believable at the time, to make success seem more likely, and consequently to persuade Queen Isobella of Spain to fund his exploration!. Of course, no-one knew there was another Continent between Europe and Asia, which is why the 'discoverers' of this new land called its inhabitants Indians!. It is quite likely that Colon suspected this was not India, (he was a very competent navigator) but he wasn't saying anything!!. He made several attempts to establish colonies in this 'new world' and this led eventually to the invasion by the Spanish 'conquistadors', with disastrous consequences for the indigenous peoples!. Yes he had one !.!.!. sailed across the ocean blue in 1492, found the New World, but thought it was Asia because he had totally screwed up on his calculations!. Came back two more times, still couldn't figure out how badly he had miscalculated, and died never knowing he had truly opened the door to a New World!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
