It was one of the most historically significant events in our nations history!. He was an extremely popular president, and after his death Lyndon Johnson, LBJ, escalated the war in Viet Nam, beginning the protest movement, and a great period of unrest in our country!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The death of any sitting president is significant!. It throws the whole world in disarray as we mourn the sudden loss, and then await the new president and his policies and attitudes!.

JFK was in the process of continuing the integration of the races here in the US, he was working to expand educational opportunities, and had already challenged the science and industrial bases to explore space!. Having said that, JFK's assassination was significant for symbolic reasons as well as practical ones!.

His administration had become known as Camalot, and a lot of Americans had great hope for his directions in terms of Civil Rights, the creation of the Peace Corps, and an American (mostly) at peace and prosperous!. He had increased US military advisors in Vietnam (Ike had started the process), but his last policy directive on Vietnam was that he wanted the US to pull all forces from Vietnam by 1965!.

His murder was shocking!. Jackie Kennedy was a darling of the people, as was her husband and young son, and his murder, in public, and the mysteries surrounding it were profoundly disturbing for most Americans!. Tensions ran terribly high, because the US wasx involved in the Cold War, and it was feared that his assassination might have been the precursor to a larger attack!.

It also shattered many of the illusions Americans had about themselves and the world they lived in!. The subsequent deaths of Dr!. Martin Luther King and JFK's younger brother, Robert by way of assassins' bullets completed the process!. In retrosepct, America seemed to slide terrifyingly downhill and JFK's assassination!.
