Well France declared a treaty with the United States Colonies - this in turn began a world war!. Spain allied itself with France and the war spread amongst the colonies of the world!. The wars weren't fought on European soil but in the various colonies!. The last shot of this conflict was actually in India!. French involvement in the US Revolution actually sparked a "World War"!. Colonies in the West Indies, Africa and Asia were the prize!. The only land or colony the English lost - was what became the United States!. They defeated the French and Spanish in the West Indies and most importantly - India!. India was the "crown jewel" of the English Empire!.

After this world conflict, France was bankrupted and tired!. Eventually it lead to the ousting of King Louis and the first of many French Revolution!. Let me tell you, no country in the world benefit more from French misfortune then the United States!. The US benefited from French involvement in it's Revolution - a war the French lost and left bankrupt AND when Napolean's France was desperate for cash, the US was able to buy the Louisiana Territories for pennies on the acre (we know it as Jefferson's Louisiana Purchase - which double, if not tripled, the size of the United States in land mass)!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

France and Britain were constantly at war in older times!. With the signing of the Treaty of Paris (1763) and the ending of the French and Indian War/Seven Year's War, France had to cede control of Canada and all of it's claims to the area East of the Missisippi River to Britain!. On a said note, Spain also had to cede Florida to British control!. France saw aiding the American revolutionaries as a way to get revenge on Great Britian!. Spain and the Netherlands also joined France in aiding the Americans!.

So basically it was revenge that caused the French to enter the war!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

France declared War on England as part of the American War of Independance!. It was the war that broke France economically!. They became involved because they had past tensions from England, who they have fought in the seven year war and had lost to at the Battle of Signal Hall and forced to surrender to!. It had been humiliating and Louis XVI decided to become involved to get even with the British for this defeat!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Can't think of a war that started in 1778 - perhaps this was when France joined the Revolution against Great Britain in the war of independence!?Www@QuestionHome@Com
