It's prime reason for existing was the early Gold Rush and when the gold petered out, it became an all-but deserted village until the BC government decided to make it a Heritage Site, cabins and businesses were restored and it became an exciting tourist stop!. There is still gold in Barkerville, and a hardy band of prospectors and miners still continue to earn their livings through the gold field - although it is greatly depleted compared to what it once was!.
