Hi Jim!.
I spent a year as an Au Pair in Salonika (Thessaloniki)!.
I actually went to see Ataturk's birthplace as it is listed as a tourist attraction!.
Address is17 Apostolou Pavlou, Thessaloniki!.The location is 8 short streets east of the church of Ayios Dimitrios!. You have to enter through the front gate of the Turkish consulate
Phone 2310/248-452!.
Just behind the consulate, this modest wood-framed house was the 1881 birthplace of Mustafa Kemal (Atatürk), the man who created the modern Turkish state and was its first president!. Given to Turkey as a present by the Greek government in 1933, the house has been restored and furnished to reflect the way it must have been at Atatürk's birth!. It contains numerous photos of the man, young and old; various letters and papers; and cases containing the clothes and uniforms he wore!.
I'm sorry but I have never heard of it being destroyed!.
Good luck my friend,

Well!.!.!.i guess about 500 yrs of occupation tend to put a damper on even the best of friends!.!.!.

Anyway to answer your question:

Though it's located in Thessaloniki, Mustafa Kemal's (Atatürk) birthplace was actually given to Turkey as a present by the Greek government in 1933!.

Since then it's been restored and furnished to reflect the way it must have been at Atatürk's birth!. It contains numerous photos of the man, young and old; various letters and papers; and cases containing the clothes and uniforms he wore!.
