I'd say Martin McCauley's easy to read 'The Soviet Union 1917 - 1991' is as good an overview of the Soviet period as you could get!.
For Tsarist Russia - I think that Geoffrey Hosking's 'Russia: People and Empire: 1552 - 1917' is excellent!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

A History of Russia Volumes 1 and 2 by Walter G!. Moss are really good choices!. Volume 1 covers up to 1917 and Volume 2 covers the rest!. They're a little bulky, but are packed with good stuff!. That's what you should probably go with first before you get into Russia writers like Robert Service or Orlando Figes!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Go to either Barnes and Noble!.com or amazon!.com and enter Russian History in the search engine!. See what pops up and read the reviews!. That's how I find books!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
