Hannibal is usually depicted as a white man, but his coins in the British Museum and the Museo Kercheriano, Rome, show him to have been an African of the purist type, with rings in his ears!. Col!. Hennebert, perhaps the leading authority on Hannibal, declares that none of the several differing portraits now exhibited as Hannibal is he, "We do not possess any authentic portrait of Hannibal" he says!.(Histoire d'Annibal, Vol!. I, p!.495, Paris,1870!.) These coins were struck by Hannibal while he was in Italy!. In the absence of other information the most logical argument is that they bore his own effigy, the more so, as several of them bear the same likeness!. Above all, let us remember that he was an AfricanWww@QuestionHome@Com

No,Hannibal was a Phoenician!. They came from the north to found Carthage!. North Africa was settled by Semites, such as Arabs or Caucasoid ethnic groups such as the Vandals who controlled North Africa after the Romans left!. The Romans had come to defeat Carthage and Hannibal as the last battle in an intense economic war to control the Mediterranean!. Frankly the kingdoms of Central Africa, who built truly magnificent palaces and towns to rule their kingdoms of trade and conquest really had no interest in crossing the mountains and the deserts that separated them from the Mediterranean shores!. The citizens of Timbuktu, who traveled to the Med shore to trade their salt probally told horrific stories of their trek!. Traders often exaggerated the travails of their travels to discourage competition!. Greater Ethiopia controlled the western access which was the easy route and the south had land and ores that were easier to get!. Why go north!. Hannibal was white as were the Romans who hunted him down and destroyed his city!. As were the Vandals who followed the Romans!. Even the Tuareg's, the only indigenous group are white!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

He was a Carthaginian!. Carthage was originally a Phoenician settlement that outstripped its founder in power and wealth!. Hannibal would have Eastern Mediterranean ancestry!. Whether that makes him a black, blue or brindle person is not particularly important!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

No!. Hannibal Barca, who was born in what is now Tunisia, was of Phoenician lineage on his father's side (Phoenicia was where Lebanon, Israel, and Turkey are today)!. His mother was born in what is now Spain!. Barca was Caucasian!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

No, Carthage itself was a Phoenician settlement in Africa!. Phoenicia was modern day Syria so he was probably pretty fair-skinned!. Unlike Rome, Carthage was not as accepting of their neighbors either!. Though they did have good relations with the African tribe of Numidia!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
