They could easily see from the trends of relations between the Empire of Japan and the USA that we would continue to interfere with their war in China, and they suspected that we might move to prevent them from carrying out their plans for the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia)!. In short, we were in the way of their plans for empirial expansion!. So!.!.!.they decided that they only way to ensure we didn't interfere was to make it impossible for us to do so!. That meant destroying the only force which could possibly impede Japanese plans; the US Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor!.

According to plan, the Japanese would smash the fleet at Pearl Harbor, and sieze the Philippenes Islands and the other US protectorates (like Guam, but also including Hawaii and the Aleutian Isl;ands off Alaska!. This way, the US would not be able to mess with their plans, and would have little impetus to do so!. The Japanese grossly underestimated the Americans as weak, soft and decadent and completely unwilling to fight!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

They knew they could do it and make it an easy and successful mission!. America would've interferred anyway, so they bombed them to try and weaken them!.

If you know the true story behind the attack on pearl harbor and not the cover up, then you will know that the Americans actually knew about the Japanese fighter planes before they bombed!. The officer on duty saw the alert on the new radar, but chose not to wake up his superior for fear of what he might to him!.
The cover up story: It was a new radar, so they thought it was impossible that Japanese fighter planes were showing up on it!.
Basically Japan knew America would get involved sooner or later, so they wanted to get some of the American navy off their backs!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

There was no logic in what Japan did and if anyone is gonna cling to a weird conspiracy theory then Pearl Harbor remains a viable candidate!.
Japan had a perfectly sensible plan before one time Harvard educated Admiral Yamamoto convinced the Japanese High Command that it made sense to attack the US Pacific Fleet in a shallow harbor on a quiet Sunday Morning!.
Japan was committed to wrenching Asia from British French and Dutch Colonial Masters!. Along the way they knew they would anger America!. Japan was well aware that in order to solidify their plans they would likely need to attack American forces in the Philippines and Guam and Wake!.
The initial Japanese plan actually made sense; ignore America as long as possible, attack America in the Philippines and Guam and Wake, but otherwise concentrate on consolidating gains made in Asia and adjacent Pacific waters!. When it was no longer possible to ignore America, then maneuver for a fight in the deep waters of the Pacific Ocean, Japans NINE or so aircraft carriers with their experienced crews against at best Four American aircraft carriers with untried untested crews!.
Then Yamamoto began yammering!. If Admiral Yamamoto had survived the war he could have made the Ford Edsel the biggest selling auto of the century!.
Nothing about Pearl Harbor made sence!. The attacking fleet was under the command of overly cautious Admiral Nagumo!. Yamamoto who conceived of the plan did not lead the attack! The attack concentrated on battleships which by the very nature of the attack were obsolete!. No effort was made to destroy the repair facilities or the most advance oil/fuel farm in The World (still a technical wonder in the 21st Century)!.
All that Pearl Harbor did was to truly p^ss off America!. We all know how s s s s l l l l o o o w w w the US Congress works!. Pearl Harbor galvanized the US Congress to act in ONE DAY!. Does anyone think that No Pearl Harbor and only an attack in The Phillipines & Guam & Wake would have gotten the US Congress off their collective ^sses any quicker then January or February of 1941 (and if Japan had ignored Wake maybe even longer)!.!.!.
No there was no logic in what Japan did!. It remains a mystery!. Yes Japan knew they would eventually have to confront America but why kick a hornet's nest with a bare foot!?
Compounding Pearl Harbor was that ever reliable dunce Adolf Hitler!. Despite the pact with Japan, Germany did not need to declare war against America (and yes there was an unoffical war between America and Germany Naval forces) and it is likely that the US Congress would have insisted on a Japan only policy if Hitler had not declared war!. But that is another lengthly topic!.

Because the Japanese empire wanted to expand, waging war w/Britain, US, Netherlands!. They had to take out the fleet, making it harder for us to defend ourselves!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
