The only similarities are that they were British colonies and, as a result, both are English-speaking countries today!.
The historical differences are (1) that, while the US was a settlers colony, Australia was established as a penal colony until the1860's, populated by convicts and their wardens and guards!.
(2) the US had a war of independence and became a free republic in the late 18th century and Australia did not!.
And (3), officially, the US is a sovereign nation today, and Australia is part of the British Commonwealth, a semi-autonomous colonial status with Queen Elizabeth II as head of state!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

both countries are based on european immigrants invading a far away country, stealing the land from its owners without compensation, exterminating the original inhabitants or reducing them to poverty and submission!.
Then the invaders go on proclaiming they invented democracy and civilisation and want to impose their abject mentality on the rest of the planet in the name of god or freedom!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
