Question: African Americans during the Civil War!?
I'm doing some research for a re-enactment and I'm going to sew (or attempt anyways lol) my own costume!. Can anybody tell me what kinds of cloth that was used for the clothing!? I'm thinking maybe cotton, but I'm not sure!. Thanks!. Pictures, if you can find them would be great!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Presuming you are doing a Union soldier, the 4-button fatigue blouse was dark blue wool flannel!. The trousers were a sky-blue kersey wool!. You could craft a non-issue shirt (say one from home) that is cotton!. The under-drawers were of a cotton canton flannel!.

The black dress hat was a wool fur felt, while the fatigue cap featured a dark blue wool flannel body with a leather brim and chinstrap!.

The source below should give you a good idea of what the unirom looked like!.

Good luck with your project!!Www@QuestionHome@Com

the vast majority of uniforms for this era were, believe it or not, wool!. imagine wearing wool at gettysburg when the tem during the day topped 95!? An old prof of mine was an expert in this, and worked as a consultant on the movie "glory" which i recommend!. The profs name was Gregory G W Urwin!. I think he teaches at Temple U now!. He led an african american reinactment regiment at UCA when i was there in 1990Www@QuestionHome@Com

Cotton was the major textile back during that time period, so I'm assuming it was what the uniforms were made of!. Your best bet is to use Google and search for "African-American soldiers, Civil War" and go from there!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
