I may be totally off base here but I've got to say that the invention of the printing press in ca!. 1439 by Johann Gutenberg had a tremendous amount to do with the development of western civilization!. The printing press initially had a huge impact on religion but had even more impact on solidification of modern languages!.

Might I add that the Protestant Reformation also had an incredible amount to do with the development of western civilization!. If this questions is for a final, you could easily break those two, the priniting press and the Protestant Reformation, into two separate topics!.
