Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
The Second Army, under General Alexander Samsonov, headed south to Russian Poland as part of the Russian invasion of the East Prussian area of the German Empire!. It was a bid to catch the German Eighth Army, under future German President General Paul von Hindenburg, in a pincer movement between the Second Army and the First Army, under General Pavel Karlovich von Rennenkampf, at K?nigsberg, Prussia, now present- day Kaliningrad, Russia!.

Unfortunately, communications were bad and the Russians sent uncoded messages!. So, the Germans knew what was coming and engaged the Second Army at Allenstein, Prussia in the Battle of Tannenburg and decisively defeated it!. 95, 000 Russian soldiers were captured, 30,000 killed and wounded and only 10,000 escaped!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
