The Japanese defensive strategy for Saipan was to defeat the Americans as they were landing and on the beachhead!.
The strategy for Iwo Jima was to let they them land and then pin them down with artillery when the beach become crowded, kill as many as possible, and then defeat them with strong defensive positions inland and in a cross- fire between Mt!. Suribachi and the northern positions!.
Iwo Jima is only about 4 miles long!. Any American position on the island was reachable by Japanese artillery and mortars!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
