no they didn't get paid 'loads'!. of course, one could question what 'paid' meant or your version of 'loads' would be but the court jester got the inside scoop on court activities!. he (all were men) also got to live because if he didn't, his life was as short as his jokes!. the jester also got room and board!. you're looking at this from a 21st century eyes!. you have to go back to the mideval times to know that those who got access to the king's court were fed better, had safe quarters and if you were really on the good side of the king, the jester's enemies were the king's enemies and that couldn't have been good for those who didn't have the good side of the king!. no, no my pet!. court jesters weren't paid in $$$ , as we know it, but were 'paid' by things far more meaningful: life, limb, safety and security!. in a place and time where your life expectancy is measured by time it took from one fort to another (two weeks - or a fortnight), what he got paid was way far better than gold!. i'm not sure how many people will answer this but the first person to answer was talking out of her butt (or other parts of the body)!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

As a matter of fact they were paid if the king felt like it (broad generality of course)!. They were usually part of the king's household and would be fed and given a bed and if the king felt generous very nice clothes and money, enough for some well known jesters to buy house and land!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
