The Vietnam war actually started in 1946 !. President TRUMAN helped support the French in there attempt to recolonize Vietnam after ww2 !. When the French gave up in 1954 president EISENHOWER supported the free south Vietnamese in there efforts to remain free of the communist North !. In 1960 president KENNEDY continued this policy by increasing the number of advisers in Vietnam !. In 1965 president JOHNSON greatly increased American involvement by putting regular army forces on the ground in Vietnam And starting bombing runs on North Vietnam cities !. President NIXON expanded the war to neighboring nations before bringing the war to an end in 1973 !.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It's difficult to say when it really started!. The Truman administration could easily have taken Ho's side and had a strong ally, at the cost of annoying France (big deal)!. The Eisenhower administration brought with it the simplistic domino theory in strength without thought!. The Kennedy administration, arrogant as it was naive, really got the ball rolling to act tough as a political show of strength to the weakness shown in the Bay of Pigs fiasco, and that's where most people mark the start!. This may be the best choice, since the president who was willing to pay any cost to protect democracy is the one who became Henry II to President Diem's Becket!. And of course Johnson is the one who took a small conflict and expanded it beyond belief!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Kind of depends on at what point you count as the start of the Vietnam war!. We had a military presence in the 50s, under Eisenhower!. There was a program of sending military "advisors" that saw a rapid increase during the Kennedy Adminstration!. By the time Lyndon Johnson became president, our forces were fully involved in the conflict, but he escalated it to include bombing of North Vietnam!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

That depends upon what you mean by "start" of the war!. Both Presidents Truman and Eisenhower sent military advisers to South Vietnam and Kennedy did the same, only in larger numbers!. It was President Johnson who asked Congress to provide the executive with the power to use force, as much as necessary, to protect our interests in South Vietnam!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Pres Jack Kennedy made the moves that started US involvement and Pres Johnson dove in headfirst!. Pres Nixon had some success with the bombing of Hanoi but he was not willing to stay strong and force Hanoi to accept better terms!. Every administration involved made plenty of blunders as far as Vietnam goes!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Technically, Eisenhower when the French bailed out in 1954!. During JFK's presidency we had only military advisers!. In 1965 under Johnson the troop build up and heavy fighting took place!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
