Answer probably depends on the period you're talking about!.
The problem with British Imperialsm is that the native population didn't share in British values!. Wealth would be taken from the country, but natives were merely servants!. They didn't learn about democracy, for instance, which the British valued at home!. Education, wealth was all denied to the native populations!. Thus the British expropriated the wealth of a country without introducing people to the benefits of civilization!. The British do have a noble sense of values, but it was only for the white British, not the colonials!.
Thus Africa and India were merely exploited, and the revolutions that came eventually were not pretty!. They were not smooth transitions of power!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I'm not certain I understand the question, imperialism was a bad thing no matter what the size of the country!.

I suppose with a small country there would be tighter governmental control by the imperialist power, the loss of population would be more acute if the parent country shipped people off for war/labor/prostitution!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
