Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Basically, they claimed to look after their slaves so the slaves didn't have to worry about working somewhere and getting food, clothing and all that!.Www@QuestionHome@Com Slavery is Bibilical, and by interpreting certain passages (I!.E!. the sons of Noah) it was claimed that blacks were destined to be slaves!. "It's better for them"!. The claim being that slaves were clothed, fed, housed, and otherwise looked after was far better than them struggling in Africa as "primitives"!. A corollary to this was that it was the duty of whites to bring christianity to the slaves, to "save their souls"!. By claiming that blacks were intellectually inferior to whites to the point that without white "supervision", blacks could not prosper!. In essense whites tried to claim that black slaves were not really human, but essentially an ususually smart animal, and could be treated like any other livestock!. Ironically, the same people who tended to make these claims also pushed for laws outlawing the teaching of reading and writing to slaves!. It's difficult to hang onto your beliefs of superiority when your "property" can read, write, and reason better than you can!.Www@QuestionHome@Com The general concensus was that African's were a lower-order form of human being whose natural place in the hierarchy of man, was to serve the white-Christian race!.
