No!. Shakespeare was not a woman!. he was a married man and had three children!. His wife was Anne Hathaway!.

As for men not being able to explain love (as acomment above suggests) why on earth not!? is love a purely female emotion then, do men never feel it!? I don't think that is true at all!.

You might as well argue, how can a woman explain war as well as he does in, say Henry V!.

However, I don't agree with the comment that says that all Shakespeare's main characters are men!. there are some wonderful female characters in the comedies, Viola in Twelfth Night for example, Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing, and Rosalind in As You Like It, and of course the Merry Wives of Windsor!. Lots of great female characters!.

And it's absolute nonsense to say (as another comment does) that women could not publish books!. There were books by women published in the 16th century, and it would not have been necessary for a woman to pretend to be a man in order to get published!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I'm not sure whether he was a woman or a man but I have some things to say to the people above me!.

#1!. Yes, there were pictures and paintings or Shakespeare but there werent many of them!. In fact, the most famous portrait of Shakespeare hasnt even been authenticated and people arent sure if thats even him!.

#2!. Shakespeare DID have a wife and children but that doesnt mean he wasnt a woman!. Shakespeare could have possibly adopted children and on top of that, there is much controversy over Shakerspeare being either a homosexual or a bisexual!.

I cant say for sure whether he/she was a woman or not but I do find it entirely possible that Shakespeare could have faked his identity to publish books (woman could not publish books)!. Women have faked their gender to get into the military before and they are pretty good at it, so I see it possible that Shakespeare was a woman but I am not 100% sure!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It has also been claimed that Shakespeare was really dramatist and spy Christopher Marlowe or Edward de Vere the 17th Earl of Oxford or the philosopher and statesman Francis Bacon!.

The theory that he was a woman is wrapped up in these because of the Droeshout portrait (the one that most people are familiar with as it usually can be found in most school textbooks) since Shakespeares face is drawn in a way that is the Elizabethan/Jacobean representation of someone wearing a mask!.

Really though, most of these "theories" stem from the University wits of the period who found it difficult to grasp that a grammar school educated man was a far more successful playwright than they!. A fine example would be the embittered Robert Greene who referred to Shakespeare in a berating poem as "an upstart crow"!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

No!. All of his plays are entirely from a male point of view with men as the main characters!. Women are typically weak characters whose fate is determined by men!.

Hamlet seeks revenge and is the main character!. The queen is helpless!. The bad guy is his uncle!.
Romeo's actions determine Juliet's fate when he fights Tybalt and quickly kills himself instead of waiting!.
Othello kills his wife (who does nothing wrong) and is the main character while another male is the bad guy!.
King Lear is noble and sympathetic, but his daughters are all weak and two are evil!. Even his good daughter ultimately dies to make Lear more sympathetic!.
Macbeth is the main character of Macbeth, his wife and the witches just influence him!.

I could go on!. In what play is there a main female character that is not there to create sympathy or plot for a main male character!? The only one close is maybe the Merchant of Venice, but it still revolves around the men!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Um!. Does the fact that he was married and had kids make any difference!? There are many programs on TV, making all sorts of claims!. What sort of evidence did the authors offer!? Hard to reply with logic when we don't know what they said!.!.!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
