Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Both sides believed that their cause was right and just, as they perceived it!.
The Southern states believed they had a right to secede, the Northern states believed that the Federal Union had to be preserved!.
A common saying in the South as the war began was, "One Southerner can whip ten Yankees!." A popular belief in the North was that Southerners would quickly realize that they were outgunned, out-numbered and out-maneuvered, and that the rebellion would end in a couple of months!. Both sides soon learned that they were dead wrong!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
