Many reasons,
They believed in either states rights , or a strong central government!.
Many just wanted to get off the farm, it was a lark!.
Many were abolitionist!.
Many were slave owners!.
Many were against northern aggression!.
Many wanted slavery to move to their states!.
Many were shamed into it by others!.
Many wanted to prove to their wives, girl friends etc they were ready to fight for them!.
Many wanted glory!.
Many went because their Fathers, brothers, friends, neighbors, etc were going!.

Same reason young men volunteer to fight in any army - they believed their country was right and they wanted to defend their country against an agressor!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
