The Government of Ireland Act was passed in 1920, creating two 'governments' in Ireland - one governing 6 of the Northern counties, and the other in the remaining 28 counties!.

The "Black and Tans" (so-called because of their uniform colours) from the Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) arrived from England to control dissent and stamp out rebel elements remaining in Irish society since the 1916 Rising!. Farmhouses were frequently searched for weapons and young IRA-enthusiasts!. They would remain in Ireland until 1922!.

The famous Republican Kevin Barry was hanged for his involvement in IRA operations in Dublin -- he was the first to be hanged by the British since the Easter Rising in 1916!. Over 20 more hangings would occur over the next couple of years!.
He refused to give information on his comrades while under torture, making him a well-admired Republican icon!.

In November 1920, 'Bloody Sunday' occured - The IRA killed 11 English men they considered secret intelligence agents!. The "Black and Tans" retaliated to this by launching an attack at a GAA game in Croke Park, Dublin!. 12 people were killed!.

Those were the major historic events!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
