We think that coin hoards and precious items were buried for safety when there was some kind of external threat, for example barbarian invasions!. People hopefully would return to reclaim their items but obviously often never did!. Possibly some coin hoards were buried when they were debased or had been issued for a rebel emperor!. Apart from this the Roman army had an underground strong room in their forts in which wages etc!. were kept!.
It was probably the normal thing to do throughout the ages to protect your valuables!. We used to talk of certain farmers who did not like banks! And the way money is going at the moment do you not think it might be better to conceal one's money rather than depositing your savings for someone else to make a profit!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes many people in medieval times buried there baubles in the ground before they went off to war etc!. some of them did not make it back home and occasionally people today find the "treasure" in fields which they have to hand over to HM!. Customs & exciseWww@QuestionHome@Com

Only people that are desperate hide their riches in the ground!. There they might be lost, discovered or destroyed!. Better to put a guard over them!Www@QuestionHome@Com
