Well, before 1776 to 1783 period, American history WAS British history!.

The first settlers were from Britain, and the Colonies were populated by British people who went their own way in the end!.

Obviously, the USA did not exist in the Middle Ages, The Tudor/Elizabethan Age or at the start of the Industrial Revolution periods!.

So, Americans tend to use these terms as well!.

During Victorian times, Queen Victoria ruled over the most powerful Empire in History, in what was then the richest and most powerful nation, owning one third of the planet, and having what was then the biggest and richest city in the world, London!.

So the term Victorian Era is used the world over, and particularly by English speaking peoples such as British, Americans, Australians, South Africans and Canadians!.

There has not yet been a period in world history when an American individual has dominated the world, that is why no country really calls any era after an American!.

But these days, we dont really name eras after people anyway, take the period from 1945 to 1990, when the west was at a stand off with the Soviets, we called that era The Cold War, and didnt name it after Churchill, Kennedy, Reagan, Thatcher, Kruschev etc!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Well, there were no colonies during the Elizabethan age, so we use that term to denote that period of time!. The Victorian Age was also called the Gilded Age in the US, but the term denotes a specific period of conservative values that Victoria espoused!. We usually don't refer to the Edwardian age, for example!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

we do not quote an American as an important point in our history because we are not Americans!!. Britain and America are only linked because Gordon Brown knows George W Bush!. American presidents, senitors or politicians don't affect us as much as our own royal family!.

It is for the same reason you don't quote monarchs as important historical figures for America!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The Americans don't have those reference points - probably because their country is still so new that they don't have to have a thumb-tab for certain historical eras!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
