You don't beat about the bush, do you, sir!? - Although probably someone should!. However, I feel that there were a few other aspects of the war that were significant!

I think that it is correct that the West often underplays the sacrificies of Soviet soldiers and civilians alike in what they called 'The Great Patriotic War!.' It wasn't just John Wayne, Churchill or Roosevelt who won the war in Europe!.

However, in many ways it was Marshall Zuckov's superior numbers of soldiers and tanks, etc!. which crushed Hitler at the end!. The British, Americans and French, etc!. must also have credit for the two-pronged assault on Hitler's Germany, The historical debates on these events will never end and each generation will claim 'the moral high ground'!. It was ever thus, with 'winners' writing the history books!.

What we must also remember is that Stalin was also a monster who 'knocked off' perhaps up to 20 millions of his own people!. What Hitler would have given! The Holocaust, as you imply, was the worst imaginable thing - denied by some - but Uncle Joe was not all that racist compared with Hitler!. He killed ANYONE who got in his way, regardless of race!.

Now this may not be news but all dictators are flawed and doomed from the start!. Sometimes, for ordinary people, it takes a little too long!. How you measure one monster against another is a hard question!. They are all 'sickos', as you mention!.

I am worried that some Russians are now demanding that the name 'Stalingrad' be reinstated!. They are very young!.

I feel that all dictators should be challenged and isolated, as far as possible!. Mugabe!? Kim Jong Ill!? Burmese Generals!? Bush!? (Yesterday it was Saddam!.) Today, this has to be done in a global setting, with economic and political pressure!. Wars beget wars and the cycle then is never-ending!.

You are right, sir, in celebrating the end of Nazism (hopefully) but if you also celebrate other mass murderers, then you will defeat your own cause!.

I hope for peace amongst all peoples!. I think that you do, too!. The innumerable dead deserve it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

So if the Soviets were so super, why did Stalin keep pushing Roosevelt and Churchill to open a second front in Europe to take so much of the pressure off Russia!? And why did the Soviets need supplies from other nations so as to fight the war!? Let's face it, it wasn't any one nation that defeated Hitler and the Nazis all alone!.

And while you're praising the Red Army, keep in mind it and Stalin only fought against Hitler and the German Army after beign stabbed in the back!. At the start of the war Russia and Germany were allies and invaded Poland together!. Hitler's sudden assualt on Russia was unexpected to Stalin and actually took pressure off England, which had not been asking others to open a second front in Europe to take the pressure off of it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

There were no superior tactics at the Battle of Stalingrad!. It was an old-fashioned slug it out bricks and sticks fight!. And, if you are thinking about the Russians cutting off German forces, that was because Hitler refused to retreat when he had the opportunity, but ordered his forces into Stalingrad!. Due to a secret treaty signed with Japan that allowed Russia to move troops off their Manchurian border, the Soviet Union was able to move a large number of troops into position to cut off Germans in Stalingrad!.

Still, your main point is well taken!. Until June 1944, the Soviet Union shouldered the majority of the war against Germany, with campaigns in Africa and Italy truly being side shows!. And, there were other battles where the Soviets did show a strategic flair, such as the Battle of Kursk!. Stalingrad, though, was just hell on earth!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

True, they played a major part in winning WW2!.

But, remember, before being invaded themselves, Stalin and the USSR signed a pact with Hitler, agreeing to carve up Poland after the German invasion!.

This was a cynical, greedy and evil act, hardly "Super" behaviour!. Part of this was the cold blooded murder of thousands of Polish soldiers in the forest of Katyn!. Hardly a "brave" act!.

In addition to this the brave and mighty Soviets had launched an unprovoked attack on tiny Finland in the 1930's, and got a deserved pasting, despite stealing plenty of Finnish territory!.

The Soviets had also forcibly annexed the independent Baltic States, Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania also!.

Stalin only ever entered the war because Hitler attacked him!. Prior to that he was quite happy to conspire WITH Hitler!

Stalin also murdered at least as many people as the Nazis, and was just as evil!. The Purges, Massacres, Gulags, and collectivisation policies that forced millions into starvation probably killed as many as 10 million people!.

After the war, Stalin and his evil Soviets shamelessly grabbed, East Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, Albania and Yugoslavia for themselves!. Installing brutal puppet communist dictators, and crushing all democratic opposition!.

Not to mention the BRAVE Soviet Army going on a Mongol style rampage of looting, mass rape on an unimaginable scale, murder and savagery in the countries they "liberated"!

With regards to the actual battles, it was the Russian winter, and Hitlers refusal to listen to his generals that cost the Germans victory on the Eastern Front, though i accept the ordinary Russian soldier was incredibly brave, despite man for man, being inferior soldiers!.

The Nazis were indeed SCUM! But to be honest so were the Soviets, Stalin was just as evil as Hitler, and some of his henchmen such as Lavrenti Beria and Sverdlov were little more than Sadistic Psychopaths!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Hi T!.I!.C!.
Like your style!. Straight to the point!.
The Battle of Stalingrad is considered by many historians to have been the turning point in World War Two in Europe!. The battle at Stalingrad bled the German army dry in Russia and after this defeat, the Germany Army was in full retreat!. One of the ironies of the war, is that the German Sixth Army need not have got entangled in Stalingrad!. Army Groups A and B were well on their way to the Caucasus in south-west Russia, when Hitler ordered an attack on Stalingrad!. From a strategic point of view it would have been unwise to have left a major city unconquered in your rear as you advanced!. However, some historians believe that Hitler ordered the taking of Stalingrad simply because of the name of the city and Hitler's hatred of Joseph Stalin!. For the same reason Stalin ordered that the city had to be saved!.
The failure of the German Army was nothing short of a disaster!. A complete army group was lost at Stalingrad and 91,000 Germans were taken prisoner!. With such a massive loss of manpower and equipment, the Germans simply did not have enough manpower to cope with the Russian advance to Germany when it came!.
Despite resistance in parts, they were in retreat on the Eastern Front from February 1943 on!. In his fury, Hitler ordered a day’s national mourning in Germany, not for the men lost at the battle, but for the shame von Paulus had brought on the Wehrmacht and Germany!. Paulus was also stripped of his rank to emphasise Hitler’s anger with him!. Hitler commented:
"The God of War has gone over to the other side!."
Ok!. T!.I!.C!. as you can see it takes me a while to get to the point!.
Good luck my friend,
Cathorio!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Aren't the soviets now the ones rooting through garbage cans trying to find something to eat!? I'd say Britain gets the lions share for defeating Hitler!. They were the first to fight Hitler when the Soviets greedily signed a non-aggression pact with Hitler!. It was Britain that refused to surrender or make peace and thereby kept open the western front which prevented Hitler from concentrating all his armies against Russia!.
Then it was the Royal navy and merchant marine that kept Russia supplied with war material and food stuffs!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Interesting what people are saying to this one! All victorious countries can take some credit for the winning WWII!. Leaving aside tactics, supplies and the like, what made the difference was the shear volume of people!. The Soviet Union lost around 22 million people compared to the USA's 417,000 and the UK's 450,000!. The volume of troops, of support and production of weapons by the remaining Soviet population and the determination to rid themselves of their invaders (mainland USA and UK were not invaded) made the biggest difference!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Stalingrad was a fine example of the Red Army's defensive abilities, but it was not the battle "that won World War 2!."

I think the Red Army's summer offensive 'Operation Bagration' in 1944 is a finer example of the Red Army on the offensive, with winning bravery, tactics, and numbers as well!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Just on the subject of Poland i'll ask a hypothetical question say I don't know South American countries had attacked the U!.S though Mexico tens of times and in the last 100 years it had resulted in millions of deaths!. say then Brazil offered to invade Mexico and split it with the U!.S wouldn't that seem like a good deal for you!. And all you need to do would be to not attack Brazil!. Its the same with the USSR Germany pact!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I think Winston Churchill's History of the Second World war put it rather better!.!.!.as did many other historians!.!.!.!.Of course it wasn't the Soviet Union as we know it now back then!.!.!.!.and where do you think the supplies came from!.!.!.!.!.have you not heard of the Arctic convoys in which many Merchant seaman died!.!.!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The Soviets fought well, but the stretched supply lines and weather eventually did in the German army!. The USSR also needed the allies to invade western Europe to take the pressure off of them!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
