As I recall, he attended an all Black College!. Thus, he didn't have any trouble getting his undergraduate degree!. I don't know about his personal circumstances so can't comment on "financial aid" or anything!. He obviously was successful!.
I STRONGLY suggest you look him up!. The Supreme Court website will have a biography with lots of information, and if you Google him - you'll find a lot of books on and about him and his impact on the Court!.
