The closest things Iran has to allies are probably Tajikstan (cultural similarities, historical ties) and France (sheltered Ayahtollah Khomeini in the 1970s!.) With most other countries the nation formerly known as Persia can only be the lesser of two evils when compared with Russia and other former Soviet states!. For the region it's a strong, wealthy country but some of its Islamic practices make even the fanatical Saudis wince!. The revolution that deposed/exiled the Shah of Iran and brought the Islamic clerics into (more) power also brought a weak president who has steadily gained power!. Now, if the USA actually went to war with Iran the military of Iran would gain more power, and possibly the President of Iran as well!. (That's how it works in the USA, not sure about Iran!.) Going to war with Iran would be a stupid and expensive thing to do, and it would not benefit the USA in any foreseeable way!. As far as I can tell Iraq and Iran are just two 'I' states and Prez Bush Jr!. may have gotten them confused in advocating war!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Iran doesn't really have any allies as it is a Shi'a nation in a Sunni Islamic world!.

It's two main enemies are the United States and Israel!. The United States because of America's support of the Shah before the 1979 Iranian Revolution and lingering bad blood over the hostage crisis, which started during the revolution!. Israel because they are Jewish!.

Recent history includes

Operation Ajax in 1953 where American operatives disposed a democratically-elected government and installed Shah Reza Pahlavi as the ruler

April 1, 1979, the Iranian Islamic Republic is established after Pahlavi flees to the United States!.

Nov!. 4, 1979, Islamic students take over the U!.S!. embassy in Tehran (NOTE: The ABC News Magazine Nightline was created to follow developments in the crisis)!.

Jan!. 19, 1980 -- 444 days later, just after Ronald Reagan takes the oath of office, Iran frees the hostages!. It was, IMO, a particularly cruel swipe at Pres!. Jimmy Carter to wait until he was no longer President, freeing the hostages minutes into Reagan's first term!.

Sept!. 22, 1980 – Aug!. 20, 1988 -- the Iran-Iraq War, started when Saddam Hussein invaded Iran trying to seize their oil fields!. Given the hatred engendered against Iran by the seizure of the embassy, the United States strongly supports Iraq during the war!. The reason that Saddam was not removed after the First Gulf War is that we needed him to be a counterweight to Iran!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The only ones that matter are China and possibly Russia!. If anyone attacked Iran, they'd probably get embargo'd by these two!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
