When Clara Barton turned 17 she became a teacher in 1839 in Bordentown, New Jersey!. When she got there she realized that she really liked teaching!. So she started her own school and it became a great school!. It was so great a man had taken it over !.Many people believed that a girl could never be in charge of such a wonderful school!. Soon after that she went to help in the war as a nurse!. She cared for the men that were wounded!. She removed bullets and cleaned wounds and comforted the solders by talking to them!. She also brought food and water to the men on the battle field!. After the war Clara went to Danville, New York!. In 1881 Barton created the American Red Cross and of course made herself president!. She thought the Red Cross needed to stat here in the U!.S!.A!. She knew people needed help!. Clara died on April 12, 1912 in Glen Echo, Maryland, she died when she was 91!.
