Typically unless the family was relatively well-off services and interment would have taken place in Virginia!. Shipping remains in those days was not terribly common, owing in particular to lack of refrigeration and long transit times!. When it was done, the remains were usually temporarily interred until the onset or winter to reduce the unpleasant effects of post-mortem decay, or the remains were sometimes put inside a barrel filled with spirits, sherry, whiskey, or he like, so that the alcohol would preserve them during transit!.

If I were going to try and determine what became of your ancestor, I might seek out newspaper archives on the day of his death and perhaps the following several days from a Richmond paper that was in business at the time, and look through the obituary section!. You might also wish to contact the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities--as fairly large and well-funded historical group in Virginia to ask for their guidance!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I think that you should first contact people in Richmond such as the library or historical groups!. They can locally research the event and possibly supply you with the information that you seek!. I am sure that an event like this will be well recorded!. Good luck!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

He probably would have been buried in Richmond unless arrangements were made to ship his body back to England!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
