1865 marked the end of the Civil War!. The South had been physically ravaged by Sherman's "March to the Sea!." Reconstruction began!. The South remained a center of agriculture for some time, but eventually industrialized!.

The growth of the cities occurred due to immigration!. During the 1840s, there was a wave of Irish/German immigration!. In between 1880s - 1920s, HUGE amounts of people from Southern and Eastern Europe (and Asia from the West) came to America!. The cities, although centers of industry and big business, were home to the poor immigrants and African Americans!.

The labor movement gained momentum during the late 1800s and early 1900s!. Immigration was an impediment (since immigrants were willing to work for cheap jobs), but unions made a huge comeback during the early 1900s!. Early on, presidents were against unions, but Theodore Roosevelt believed in fair business and helped settle disputes between unions & big business!.

The role of women changed during the late 1800s and early 1900s!. Women gained independence due to their role in WWI, the 19th amendment (suffrage), and economic boom during the 1920s!. Conservatism [the idea that women should work IN the house] was on and off during the 20th century!.

Minorities in the early 1900s faced bad conditions, poverty and inequality in the inner cities!. They faced increasing amounts of rascism during the Great Depression!. Movements for African American Civil Rights, and anti-poverty campaigns during the 50s and 60s facilitated their hardships!.

Government control over business was very influential during the early 1900s - first, the govt helped big businesses agianst organized workers {in unions} but Progressive Presidents {TR, Taft, Wilson} were trustbusters who made sure that big business was kept at helm!.

Hope that helps (: GOOD LUCK!Www@QuestionHome@Com
