Ind entured servants were supposed to receive their freedom after a fixed number of years, but there were various reasons why an employer could prolong their term of service!. for instance, a woman who became pregnant while she was indentured would have her service extended to make up for the time lost through pregnancy, and if she was still under indenture by the time the baby was weaned, her child was bound out as a servant, even though still a toddler!. Although not technically slaves, they could be treated as badly as slaves, a quarter of them died before they could gain their freedom!.

However, indentured servants who did gain their freedom sometimes did very well for themselves!. For instance Mary Johnson and her husband, who were possibly the first African Americans, came to Virginia as indentured servants, some time before 1620, and after they earned their freedom, acquired a 250-acre farm and five indentured servants of their own!.

Slaves were sometimes freed by their owners, and i think sometimes they saved up and bought their freedom, but I don't think owners were under any obligation to free them if they did not want to!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I would never rely on the people who answer here for reliable information!. If you do, and your teacher sees it is all wrong, you will get a bad grade!. Do honest research yourself and get the correct information so you will get a better grade!. Good luck!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
